About this Page
This website was developed for Stockton University P.S.M. course ENSC 5202, Environmental Quality, taught by Dr. Tait Chirenje.
Here you can find information about CERCLA and the Superfund remediation process at the Federal Aviation Administration Tech Center. The FAA Tech Center Superfund contains multiple Operable Units. Each Operable Unit has its own remediation plan and funding. This site will provide background information on sources of contamination and remediation strategies.
Sources of contamination and remediation are examined for five Operable Units: OU #1, OU #7, OU #14, OU #15, and OU #16. OU# 1 and #7 primarily contained contamination from jet-fuel. Remediation began soon after the Superfund site was listed on the NPL and has continued since. OU #14-16 do not have RODs, but research conducted from previous Five Year Reviews and other documentation provided some background for potential issues at these sites.

About CerCLACERCLA was enacted in 1980 as a non-regulatory clean up and liability law for chemical industries and other facilities. The most highly contaminated sites are listed on the NPL, or the National Priorities List.
CERCLA is associated with the cleanup of Superfund sites throughout the United States. EPA history and related EPA laws are discussed in the overview. |
About the FAA SuperFunD The FAA Superfund site contain about 30 areas of concern on 5,000 acres of property. These areas are fenced and secured to prevent unauthorized access. Information on this site is publicly available through the US EPA.
On the Overview page, you can read about the history of this site. Site-wide contamination and remediation strategies are also discussed here. |
FAA SuperFund Remediation
This website offers an analysis of remediation conducted at the FAA Tech Center. Documentation provided by the EPA was used to study the time-frame and progress made at this site. An interview was conducted with the EPA Remedial Project Manager for additional information on remediation strategies and the status of operable units that are awaiting Records of Decision. Press Releases were also reviewed to examine what has been shared with the public.
